February PAPER Meeting

This Sunday is Valentine’s Day and for our PAPER meeting it will be Michael LaFosse Day. No, Michael is not going to be here and it’s not his birthday, that I know of. Instead we will learn two new models created by Michael. One is a 6-piece modular flower. The other model is his penguin.

For the flower, 3 inch square paper is fine. That will make a flower about 5-6 inches in diameter. Bring at least 10 inch square paper for the penguin. If you have larger paper, that would make your first time easier. And the penguin is a duo-color model, so paper that is black on one side and white on the other will give you the true “penguin effect.”

Our meeting will be at the Bellevue Public Library, from 1-4 pm. We will be in the main conference room. Hope to see you then.

January PAPER Meeting

Edison modulars

This coming Sunday, January 10, we begin another year of PAPER meetings. By my hazy recollection, 2010 will be PAPER’s 15th year. Time flies when you are folding origami.

Our meeting this month will be at the Redmond public library from 1-4 pm. If you need information or directions to the library, click here.

I will teach two models. The first is a modular, shown in the photo, by Christine Edison. The unit is simple. The connection will take a few tries to get used to the maneuvering necessary to bring the ends of two units together.  The unit can be used to make a 30 unit dodecahedron or a 12 unit cube. In order to get ready for Valentines Day, I am looking for a heart-themed model to teach also.

Please remember to bring some paper to fold, since we can’t provide group paper anymore. The modular can be folded from 3 inch paper, though it can be tricky if you have large or clumsy fingers. 4-6 inch paper will be good for learning.

Hope to see you on Sunday.

Diagrams from December PAPER meeting

The copier at the library was messed up at our last meeting. I was unable to make copies of diagrams for the models taught during the meeting.

For the inflatable Swan, by Roman Diaz, visit Origami-Shop.com. On that page you will see a link to download a bonus supplement to Roman’s new book Origami Essence, which looks to be a terrific book. The OE bonus contain diagrams for seven models not included in OE. The Swan starts on Page 21.

Paper Batteries

This article doesn’t have anything to do with origami. It is an interesting use of paper to create hi-tech batteries with nano-technology.

By dipping an ordinary piece of paper into ink infused with carbon nanotubes and silver nanowires, scientists have been able to create a low-cost battery or supercapacitor that is ultra-lightweight, bendable and very durable. The paper can be crumpled, folded or even soaked in acidic or basic solutions and still will work.

That is some pretty cool stuff!

December PAPER Meeting

This Sunday, December 13, will be our last PAPER meeting for 2009. We will get together in Seattle at the Beacon Hill Library from 1-4 pm. If you need information or directions to the library, click here. I have two models to teach. One is an inflatable swan by Roman Diaz. The other is my Christmas Star.

Please remember to bring some paper to fold, since we can’t provide group paper anymore. The swan can be folded from 6 inch paper, but for the first time it is easier with larger paper. The star can be folded from 6 or 8 inch paper. Both models show both sides of the paper if you want to bring duo-colored paper.

Hope to see you on Sunday.

PAPER has produced, on behalf of Kemper Development, an origami exhibit as part of the Bellevue Magic Season.  During the month of December there will be many events and celebrations in downtown Bellevue in honor of the Christmas season. As part of the Snowflake Lane events, we mounted an exhibit in the Bellevue Place Winter Garden.

The folders participating in the exhibit include John Blackman, Giang Dinh, Faye Goldman, Jamie Kelley, Goran Konjevod, Mark Morden, Meenakshi Mukerji,  Bernie Peyton, Arnold Tubis, and John Smiley. (more…)

This Sunday, November 15, is our next PAPER meeting. We will be gathering at the Redmond Public Library from 1-4 pm. I will be teaching my newest modular, Floating Stars, and a new Michael LaFosse butterfly, June’s Butterfly. Also, if we can work it out, we will view photos from PCOC.

Hope to see you on Sunday.

November PAPER events

November will be a busy origami month with three events that PAPER will be participating in.

PCOC – November 5-8: PCOC will be held next weekend in San Francisco. Many of our PAPER group will be there participating in the classes and events. Look for photos of the conference here in a week or so.

PAPER meeting – November 15: Because PCOC is next Sunday, our November group meeting will be on the third Sunday of November. Revisit here in about a week for more information about the activities on the 15th.

Between the Folds – November 21: The Seattle premier of “Between the Folds” at the SIFF Theater at Seattle Center. PAPER will be teaching origami to the film-goers after the movie. We will have more details at the November 15 meeting.

We hope to see you at one or more of these events. Stay tuned for announcement of a special December event in Bellevue.
